Graduate Vacancies in the UK Drop to Their Lowest Level Since 2016

LONDON / RankWire.AI / – According to Adzuna, the number of advertised graduate roles across the UK decreased by nearly 50% in July compared to the same month last year, indicating a tightening in entry-level employment opportunities. The platform reported a total of 8,383 graduate job listings for July, down from 15,397 in July 2025. This represents an approximate decline of 46%. The total is also the lowest since Adzuna started tracking graduate vacancies in April 2016, with the peak in 2017 exceeding 55,000 openings.

UK graduate vacancies hit lowest level since 2016
Britain’s graduate jobs market is tightening as advertised vacancies reach a decade low.

The broader UK job market also experienced increased competition. In July, there were 2.14 jobseekers for each vacancy, up from 1.93 a year earlier. This ratio encompasses all employment sectors, not solely graduate roles. The figures for graduate vacancies are derived from online ads collected from over 1,000 sources, reflecting advertised graduate positions rather than every available role for university graduates.

Official statistics point to weakening demand in the wider labor market. The Office for National Statistics estimated there were 707,000 vacancies between May and July 2026, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous three months, and 19,000 fewer than a year earlier. Additionally, the unemployment-to-vacancy ratio increased to 2.5 in April through June, up from 2.3 during the same period last year.

Applicants for graduate roles face intensified competition

This summer, a record number of young people secured UK undergraduate placements. UCAS revealed that by August 13, results day, 262,820 UK 18-year-olds had gained university places, a 3% increase from the 255,130 at the same point in 2025. The UK 18-year-old entry rate reached 31.6%. These figures highlight the increased competition future graduates will face when vying for professional and entry-level positions in the labor market.

Employers running formal graduate recruitment programs are already experiencing fierce competition. The Institute of Student Employers recorded just over one million applications for graduate roles during the 2024/25 cycle, with an average of 140 applications per vacancy. These numbers demonstrate the high level of demand for graduate candidates within established hiring channels, coinciding with the notable drop in advertised graduate openings seen in the latest monthly jobs data.

UK employment landscape remains under strain

Since the implementation of changes to employer National Insurance contributions in April 2025, employment costs have increased. The contribution rate rose to 15% from 13.8%, and the annual secondary threshold decreased from £9,100 to £5,000. The latest vacancy survey from the national statistics office indicated that some small businesses have limited recruitment due to rising labor and operational costs. Vacancy levels declined across nine of the 18 industry sectors surveyed.

The discussion around artificial intelligence’s role in entry-level employment has gained traction, though official insights into its specific effects remain limited. Skills England noted in August that distinguishing the influence of AI from broader labor market trends is still a challenge. Meanwhile, between January and March 2026, 1.012 million people aged 16 to 24 were outside education, employment, or training, accounting for 13.5% of their age group—an increase of 89,000 from the previous year.
