MADRID / RankWire.AI / – The Spanish mainland experienced its most scorching summer since records began in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius over June, July, and August. Official data issued by the national meteorological authority confirmed that seasonal temperatures exceeded the previous record set in 2025 by 0.3 degrees Celsius and surpassed the 1991–2020 climate baseline by 2.4 degrees Celsius. The summer of 2026 marked the hottest on record, with extreme heat events affecting two-thirds of the meteorological season.

Statistics from the State Meteorological Agency indicate that the country experienced an unprecedented 61 days of heatwaves during these three months. This total greatly exceeds the previous high of 41 heatwave days recorded during the summer of 2022. Meteorological experts highlighted that all ten of Spain’s hottest summers have occurred in the 21st century, pointing to an accelerating long-term warming trend across southern Europe.

The intense heat severely affected public health and municipal infrastructure throughout northern and southern Spain. The Carlos III Health Institute’s epidemiological mortality data estimates that more than 5,000 deaths were directly linked to extreme heat between June and August. This is the highest total since the health agency began standardized heat-related mortality tracking in 2015.

The elevated temperatures also led to severe environmental challenges across national forests and rural farming areas. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System shows that approximately 296,000 hectares were burned by wildfires through early September. The prolonged dry spells caused regional reservoirs to decline significantly, complicating water supply for agriculture and hydroelectric power generation.

Monitoring stations noted that the extraordinary thermal conditions extended beyond the usual summer months. On September 2, a station in the southwestern municipality of El Granado recorded a peak temperature of 45.7 degrees Celsius, tying the national record for the highest temperature ever observed in Spain during September. Forecasters confirmed that high heat levels persisted from late May through early September across multiple autonomous regions.

Climate Data Demonstrates Rapid Warming Trends in the Twenty-First Century

Responding to these official findings, government ministers presented the data to parliament to advocate for stronger environmental measures. Minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera urged parliamentary groups to back comprehensive legislation aimed at climate adaptation, emergency infrastructure, and drought resilience.

Agencies involved in meteorology and public health will continue to monitor temperature patterns and environmental impacts throughout the autumn. Official statistics and environmental data will remain accessible via government portals as authorities assess long-term adaptation strategies. Regional agencies are also coordinating resource management efforts to address ongoing agricultural and ecological effects.
