Frontex reports 35% decrease in irregular border crossings in eight months

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – European Union external border crossings declined by 35 percent year-over-year through August, according to data from Frontex. Over the eight-month period, approximately 75,000 detections were recorded, a significant drop from 2025 levels across nearly all major transit routes. The agency attributes this downward trend to proactive interdiction efforts in departure countries and increased intelligence-sharing with partner nations, aimed at disrupting human smuggling operations before vessels set sail.

As reported by the Emirates News Agency, the primary transit corridors into Europe remain the Eastern Mediterranean and Central Mediterranean routes, collectively accounting for nearly 60 percent of the total regional detections. The number of irregular border crossings into the EU has fallen 35 percent, thanks to maritime enforcement actions, interdiction campaigns, and repatriation programs led by coastal authorities in Libya and Tunisia, which have contributed to curbing vessel departures along the Central Mediterranean route.

Despite overall declines in major European pathways, reports indicate ongoing volatility as human smuggling networks adapt to increased border security measures. The Western Mediterranean route, serving mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, is the only major corridor to record growth, rising by 34 percent compared to the previous year. The decline in crossings into the EU by 35 percent has been partly driven by intensified maritime patrols in Morocco, prompting smugglers to shift departure points eastward toward the Algerian coast.

Frontex Data Reveals 75,000 Detections During Eight-Month Span

The Western African route to the Canary Islands experienced the most notable drop among all maritime transit paths, with detections decreasing by 58 percent to around 5,100 arrivals. Officials linked this decline to joint maritime patrols carried out by Mauritanian and Senegalese security forces in cooperation with European agencies. Meanwhile, detections on the Eastern Mediterranean route fell 25 percent, exceeding 24,200 arrivals, with most maritime activity concentrated along the Libya to Crete corridor.

Frontex’s Executive Director Hans Leijtens noted that while seasonal traffic typically peaks during summer, August saw only 10,700 detections across all EU borders. This summer marked the first operational phase of the European Union Pact on Migration and Asylum, which introduced standardized screening procedures, biometric data collection, and document verification protocols across external borders of member states.

Maritime Operations Reduce Vessel Departures from West Africa

Movement across the English Channel toward the United Kingdom dropped by 43 percent, with combined exit attempts totaling 26,600 detections. Despite this overall reduction, border authorities caution that human traffickers continue to operate heavily overcrowded and unsafe vessels across open waters. International humanitarian groups stressed that maritime crossings remain perilous, with records showing significant loss of life along Mediterranean routes throughout the year.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency will sustain ongoing operations to support national border enforcement and process arrivals. Comprehensive statistical dashboards, monthly migration trend reports, and border management updates will continue to be accessible via official EU portals. Additionally, international law enforcement agencies persist in monitoring maritime traffic to combat human smuggling networks along active coastal corridors.
