BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation climbed to an estimated 3.3% in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July. The rate stood at 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Eurostat released the flash estimate on Sept. 1. Consumer prices rose 0.4% from July under the harmonised index of consumer prices. The latest reading shows a clear increase in headline inflation across the single-currency bloc.

Energy lifts euro area inflation to 3.3% in August
Energy inflation reached 14.3% as euro area consumer prices accelerated in August 2026.

Energy prices recorded the strongest annual increase among the main inflation categories. The energy rate reached 14.3% in August, compared with 10.3% in July. Energy prices also increased 2.9% from the previous month. Services inflation moved lower to 3.0% from 3.3%. Non-energy industrial goods inflation rose to 1.2% from 0.9%. Food, alcohol and tobacco inflation held steady at 1.2%.

Measures that exclude selected categories showed more limited changes during the month. Inflation excluding energy remained at 2.2% in August. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco eased to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food slipped to 2.1% from 2.2%. These measures provide separate views of price changes after removing categories that can move sharply from month to month.

Energy prices lead August inflation increase

Inflation rates differed sharply across the euro area’s 21 member countries. Lithuania posted the highest estimate at 5.8%, while Cyprus reached 5.2% and Bulgaria 5.1%. Spain recorded 4.5%, Belgium 4.2% and Luxembourg 4.0%. Estonia had the lowest estimate at 1.3%. Malta followed at 1.9%, while Finland recorded 2.4%. Germany stood at 2.9%, France at 2.7% and Italy at 3.2%.

Monthly consumer price movements also varied across the currency bloc. Belgium recorded a 2.1% increase from July, while Luxembourg rose 1.8%. Cyprus posted a monthly gain of 1.5%. France and Bulgaria each increased 0.8%, while Ireland, Spain and Malta rose 0.6%. Finland recorded a 0.4% decline. Slovakia showed no monthly change. Germany increased 0.2%, and Italy posted a 0.1% monthly rise.

Expanded euro area shapes 2026 data coverage

The euro area has included 21 countries since Bulgaria adopted the single currency on Jan. 1, 2026. Data through December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member composition. Figures from January 2026 cover the enlarged currency area. The European Union statistical system uses a chain-index formula when euro area membership changes. That approach allows the inflation series to reflect the current composition while maintaining continuity across earlier reporting periods.

Eurostat will publish the complete harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The next flash estimate, covering September inflation, is scheduled for Oct. 2. The harmonised index tracks changes in prices households pay for consumer goods and services. Annual inflation compares prices with the same month one year earlier. Monthly inflation measures the change from the immediately preceding month, providing a separate view of short-term price movement across the euro area.
